England U21 head trainer Aidy Boothroyd says before revealing the Manchester United is sharing a room with club rival Phil Foden on duty he has been impressed with Mason Greenwood. With the United forward earning his initial call-up into Boothroyd’s side, greenwood and also Manchester City midfielder Foden have been contained at the squad together for the first time. The 17-year-old has featured in each of four of the matches of United this year. “He is a very, very talented player,” Boothroyd said. “He walks through the doorway and you immediately like him because he’s such a humble, pleasant young bloke. “He is rooming together with Phil funnily enough that’s both Manchester lads getting together and performing for England and also living together for a couple of months also. “Mason’s a great talent, we’ve just had one session but he looks really impressive and will surely increase the armoury we have got.” Nineteen-year-old Foden has featured 19 occasions in the Premier League for City since making his debut. Boothroyd says his position is not one to worry about, despite struggling this season. “Phil’s working with the best gamers in the world and possibly the best coach in the world so he is going to find a great deal of positives from that,” he added. “He is not playing games but I believe City and Pep [Guardiola] understand just what to do with him better than maybe I would because they see of him than I do.” Since the summer’s unsatisfactory European Championship effort – that watched Boothroyd’s staff depart the tournament in the group stage – three members of that squad have been called up into the senior side. James Maddison, Mason Mount and aaron Wan-Bissaka all have been selected by Gareth Southgate, also Boothroyd believes there has never been better time to make the step from the U21s. “It’s terrific for me that although we had the disappointment of their summer, three celebrities have come out of it. They’re all really excellent characters and I am absolutely delighted for them,” he said. “There’s never been a better time to become an England player with a man who is brave enough to perform them at Gareth. “I believe they’re three very talented players and they take advantage of them. They’re currently working . “They deservedly got into the England squad and they have to do this last bit of getting into the group and receiving a couple caps under their belt” The U21s kick-off their new European qualifying campaign with a visit to Turkey on Friday, before three days 28, they head home to play with with Kosovo in Hull.
